Giving Tree

Hi parents and guardians. It is getting chilly out and some people don't have enough money to buy neck warmers, mitts, hats and scarves. So please try to donate one or two things to help children. There will be big bins outside the office for you to put your donations in. Please donate by Nov. 24th

We're Off To A Great Start!

The students of room 4 have quickly gotten back into the swing of things and we are finding ourselves very busy! We have just completed a Social Studies theme on Connecting With Canadians, and today we started a Science unit on Properties of Matter. This unit is always a hit with the students, as there are many hands on activities along with a culminating event called the "Super Fun Day of Snazzy Science"!

We have focused on sorting, data collection and graphing during math workshop. We have also heavily emphasized practice with basic fact recall and mental math, as this is one of our school goals this year. We are working on increasing proficiency and automaticity of recalling facts.  Further information will be sent home to families later this month.

In room 4, we have worked very hard to create a culture in our classroom that we can be proud of. We pride ourselves on being courteous, respectful, supportive and welcoming. We have read many fantastic books about building character, and we often talk about the kind of people we want to be, and how we want others to see us. I am so proud of the the students of room 4 for making everyone feel like they belong and for truly showing that we care about others.

Keep up the great work room 4!!

Fireflies Bring Thoughts of Summer...

We have finally finished our integrated art and writing project about fireflies. The results have been fantastic; stunning paintings of warm summer nights watching fireflies accompanied by lovely free verse poems. The students did a great job of thinking like "poets" and were able to experiment with interesting word choice and creating a sense of flow in their writing. If you're at Linwood School, please check out our "Fireflies"!

Wear Pink in Support of Anti-Bullying

On Wednesday, April 9th, the students of room 4 elected to wear a pink item of clothing to show that we are not bystanders, we will stand up to bullying. We have read many books that deal with the subject of bullying and have had several meaningful class discussions about the topic. In order to express how we feel, the students of room 4 made a video that is our message to bystanders, who we feel have the potential to turn things around. To do our part we must stand up and speak out. We have used the song "Brave" by Sara Bareilles as our inspiration, as we found her lyrics supported the things we wanted to say. We hope that you enjoy the video!

Countdown to Spring Break!!

Honestly, I think this is the longest winter on record!! It certainly feels that way for all of us in Room 4!
The students and I have decided we are tired of seeing winter art, and so our recent art project has been creating a summer scene with a night sky lit with fireflies. Memories of warm summer nights! We are going to be doing a short writing activity to go along with our paintings, and as soon as everything is complete, we will post a photo of the finished bulletin board.

In this post you will find a few photos of the cooperative problem solving we have been working on, as well as some highlights from our trip to the Museum of Man and Nature.

I would like to wish everyone a restful and enjoyable spring break!

Problem solving - Using cards containing the directions for the design, the students must determine the correct order for the directions to build the designs accurately.

I Love To Read Olympians

Room 4 was busy this week celebrating Canada's success at the Olympics, as well as working towards our own reading goals. We earned "gold" through 15 minutes of daily independent reading, enjoyed hearing stories read by our "guest" readers, and finished off the week with a day of Olympic events.

Welcome to the "New" Room 4 Blog

Hello Room 4 Families! I missed everyone, and I am so happy to be back in the classroom! Last year the students of Room 4 each had their own blog using the Kidblog website. With the change in our technology this year, we are going to simplify things by having one classroom blog. We will ensure that every student has opportunities to contribute to the blog. We hope that families will use our blog to connect with the classroom. We are excited to share the things we have learned with our families!
